Character Spotlight: Phil Coulson
Every Monday here at Invincible Marvel, we do a character spotlight on a character in the Marvel Comics Universe, giving you a brief history and recommended reading about this character. To celebrate the upcoming return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and since today is our first day of our Marvel TV celebration, our Invincible Marvel Character Spotlight this week is the none other than Phil Coulson!
History in the Marvel Comics Universe: Phil Coulson became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the six issue miniseries Battle Scars, along with his old friend Nick Fury Jr. Coulson eventually became S.H.I.E.L.D.’s supreme commander for Special Ops. He formed his own team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to combat threats in the Marvel Universe, where heroes occasionally reached out to help Phil and his team.
History in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phil Coulson was a high-ranking agent in S.H.I.E.L.D., serving under S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. Coulson often came into contact with famous Marvel heroes, specifically Iron Man, Thor, and the other Avengers. Coulson was then killed by Loki when he staged an attack on the helicarrier. Fury then uses Coulson’s death to motivate the Avengers to take on Loki.
Coulson is then revived by Nick Fury by a drug made from a Kree corpse. He then forms his own team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to combat threats while the Avengers aren’t around. His team takes on HYDRA, a different faction of S.H.I.E.L.D., a tribe of Inhumans, a traitor in their midst, and a evil Inhuman known as Lash.
